How To Prepare For A Better Audition

How To Prepare For A Better Audition

There is a certain way to prepare for an audition…

When you find a scene that you would like to audition for, the first step is to really understand the scene!

Take a look at what is happening and why it is important to the story. If you do not fully understand the different aspects of the story, you won’t be able to play the scene correctly. It will also be quite obvious to the casting director that you do not really understand the scene and what it is all about.

How to Prepare:

  1. Differentiate between what is apparently going on in the scene and what is really going on.
  2. Find the depth, color, and humor beyond the printed page.
  3. Once you have a good grasp of the scene and the character you’re portraying, the next step is to determine how you’re going to play the character.

Deciding how to play the character results in your making “choices” as to how to how you feel is the best way to tell the story in the scene. So a choice is the act of choosing how you want to play the part.

Casting director, Lisa London has said, “You should make choices that are real and appropriate…bring as much of yourself to the table as possible in the auditions. Don’t try to be someone else and mimic other people’s choices.”

She goes on to say, “I have seen actors in the waiting area of the casting office, listen to other actors practicing their lines or listen through the door to what an actor was doing and then change their choice based on what someone else is doing that they think is funnier or better. Not a good decision, because we, as Casting Directors, are looking for what you as an actor bring to the table.”
– Lisa London “From Start To Stardom”

Her point is that what they want to see is what is unique about you and what you bring to the table. So when you begin to prepare for an audition be sure you understand the story, make choices that feel right to you and bring your individuality to the reading.
