Lilly had been consistently putting up scenes in acting class every week and it showed in her work. She had become more daring in the parts she played and the choices she made in portraying those characters.

Today she was getting private acting coaching from Mr. B for a small part she’d gotten in a wonderful film. The film was being done by a very well know director and producer with big names attached as the leads. The character Lilly was playing was full of complexities and very demanding. The part was also pivotal to the story line so a lot was riding on this.

As she sat in the reception area of Mr. B’s office, she was wearing a cashmere sweater, rolled up denims, and high heeled booties. Her long hair fell around her shoulders as she was listening to music while making notes in her script. A moment later, she felt someone next to her and when she looked up she saw Mr. B standing there smiling at her. He had on blue jeans, a white shirt, dark jacket, and leather boots. He looked very sexy and it made her a little nervous.

Mr B: Come on in to the office, Lilly. Would you like coffee, water, anything?

Lilly: No, Mr. B, I’m fine. I’m just excited about getting this part and so grateful to have the opportunity to work on this script with you.

Mr. B: I read it last night and it’s really well written. There are a lot of things going on in this script which makes it a great story. Have you gone over the script with the director yet?

L: No we’re doing a table reading this Friday, so I’ll find out more then, but I wanted to go in with some preparation and see if I’m headed in the right direction.

Mr. B looked at her and found it difficult to focus on the script in that moment. She was breathtakingly beautiful and she didn’t know it. Her hair had gotten some subtle highlights from being out in the sun and her skin had the radiant glow of someone who was healthy and happy with her life. It was hard for him to look away and when she looked up, she caught him staring at her.

She could feel her cheeks go bright red. The attraction was palpable. She felt it, he felt it, but neither of them said anything.

Mr. B: Why don’t we read your first scene and then we’ll talk about it.

L: Perfect. So, from the top of page 20 when she enters the hotel suite.

After they’d worked on the second scene for a while, Mr. B suggested they put down their scripts and explore the first time the characters had met. Create a scene that wasn’t in the script and find out about their initial attraction to each other. He began the improvisation by flirting with her. He never broke eye contact with her and was fully present and interested in everything she had to say. It made her feel a bit shy at first, but then she began to flirt back with the same intensity and she realized her character was very sexual and more playful than she had originally thought. There was a chemistry being created like none she’d ever experienced. It was hot, it was dangerous, and it was right for the scene. At one point, he leaned toward her smiling and said, “You know I want to kiss you, don’t you?” And she smiled back and said “Yes.” Her heart was pounding and she wasn’t sure if it was her or the character, but she didn’t really care.

Then Mr. B said, “Lilly, that’s wonderful! The character realizes the power she has over him and she isn’t afraid to use it.” Lilly had to come back to earth quickly and she did so a bit unsettled. She knew that something very real had happened in that moment and it was thrilling.

They spent the next 3 hours going over the script and then going for coffee down the street when they needed a break. As they were walking, the wind blew back her hair and she looked so fresh and full of life while telling him a story about her brother, who was similar to a character in the script. He teased her for a moment and she threw her head back laughing at what he’d said. How long would they be able to go on pretending there was nothing happening between them?

They’d deal with that another time. Right now it was all about preparing her for a part she was born to play.
